Recipe and Instructions
by Karen Tack

Ingredients:
  • 1 (9-inch) round cake
  • 2 chocolate-covered doughnuts
  • ½ can (1 cup) vanilla frosting
  • Red food coloring
  • 1 can (16 oz) chocolate frosting
  • ½ cup chocolate sprinkles
  • 2 brown M&M's or black jelly beans
  • 2 miniature York peppermint patties
  • 1 chocolate Twizzler
What you'll need:
  • A bread knife
  • A serving platter
  • 2 resealable sandwich-size plastic bags (Ziploc)
  • Kitchen shears or scissors
Trimming the cakes:
  1. Place the cake on a clean work surface. Using the bread knife, trim a 1 ½-inch triangle-shaped notch from opposite sides of the cake (see template). Discard scraps. Place the trimmed cake onto a serving platter.
  2. Cut ½ inch from one side of each doughnut.
For the white, red, and pink frosting:
  1. Spoon ¼ cup of the untinted vanilla frosting into a resealable plastic bag.
  2. Add enough red food coloring to 2 Tbsp of the vanilla frosting to tint it red and spoon it into a separate resealable plastic bag.
  3. Add a few drops of the red food coloring to the remaining vanilla frosting to tint it a pale pink.
Frosting the cake:
  1. Spread the chocolate frosting onto the top and sides of the cake, avoiding the lower half of the monkey's face.
  2. Spread the pale-pink frosting into a kidney bean–shaped area over the monkey's mouth, chin, and cheeks, as pictured.
  3. Press the chocolate sprinkles into the forehead, the top of the head, and the underside of the monkey's chin.
Assembling the cake:
  1. Press the trimmed edges of the doughnuts onto the cake for the monkey's ears. Press the M&M's or the jelly beans into the center of the cake to make the monkey's nostrils.
  2. Snip a very small corner from each bag of frosting. Pipe a red frosting line onto the pink part of the cake for the monkey's smile.
  3. Pipe 2 white circles onto the top of the cake for the monkey's eyes and press the peppermint candies into them. Add a dab of white frosting for the sparkle in each eye, as pictured.
  4. Snip the chocolate Twizzler into thin 2-inch strands with kitchen shears or clean scissors and insert them into the top of the cake for the monkey's hair.

Johnny Cupcakes and Sock Monkey

Sock Monkey at the Johnny Cupcakes L.A.
One-Year Anniversary Celebration

Sock Monkey lurves cupcakes

All Photos by Camp Sock Monkey via iPhone

The Johnny Cupcakes L.A. store on Melrose Avenue celebrated its 1-Year Anniversary on August 1, 2009. In this economy, the success of his store is certainly a testament to his hard work, dedication and business savvy. Moreso, few companies can boast of the Johnny Cupcakes brand loyalty. At only 27-years old, Johnny Cupcakes has built an enormous fan base by demonstrating his appreciation and treating them with respect.

The doors opened to a crowd lined up around the block, just like last year's grand opening. There were freebies and games to play. Everyone received the First Issue of The Cupcake Chronicle. There were opportunities to win limited edition prizes. Yummy gourmet cupcakes were in abundance for all. The mood remained festive, even after hours of waiting. The staff was eager and good-natured.

Johnny Cupcakes' family plays an important role in his business. His adorable younger sister was also on hand again. At midnight she was still a smiling bundle of energy even at midnight and still on East Coast time. Johnny and his sister happily posed for photos, chatted with their customers and autographed t-shirts. Sock Monkey was real impressed! They remembered Sock Monkey from last year's Grand Opening too!

Johnny Cupcakes deserves every ounce of his hard-earned success. Nice guys do finish first!

Monkey Cupcakes by Martha Stewart

Photo and Recipe of Monkey Cupcake
by Martha Stewart

Monkey Cupcakes by Martha Stewart
Tools and Materials
  • Cupcakes (any flavor)
  • Chocolate candy wafers, such as Necco
  • Chocolate Frosting (below)
  • 12 ounces fondant, tinted with yellow gel-paste food coloring
  • 2-inch round cutter
  • 7/8-inch round cutter
  • 3-inch flower-shaped cutter
  • Pastry bag
  • Small plain round pastry tip
From easy embellishments to intricate animals, there's a topper to suit your every mood. Any basic cupcake will make an apt canvas.

Step 1
For ears, make 2 small horizontal slits with a paring knife in opposite sides of 1 cupcake, just above paper liner, and then partially insert a wafer into each slit. Frost cupcake and wafers. Repeat, reserving remaining frosting.

Step 2
Roll fondant to a 1/8-inch thickness. For each cupcake, cut out 1 round at 2 inches and 2 rounds at 7/8 inch; cut a straight edge on each 7/8-inch round. Using flower-shaped cutter, cut out 1 flower from fondant; cut off 2 petals, creating straight edges. For eyes, press the 2 petal pieces at top of each cupcake. For mouth, overlap bottom of eyes with 2-inch round. Place the 7/8-inch rounds on ears, straight sides in. Pipe pupils, nose, and mouth with reserved frosting, above.

Chocolate Frosting
Ingredients
Makes about 4 cups.
  • 1/2 pound sifted confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 6 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
  • 9 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted
  • 3/4 cup sour cream

Directions
  1. Beat cream cheese and butter with a mixer on medium-high speed until fluffy, about 4 minutes. Reduce speed to low. Beat in sugar mixture. Beat in chocolate, then sour cream. Use immediately, or cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days. (Bring to room temperature, and beat on low speed until smooth before using.)

Hook'em while they're young!

Sock Monkey fans are a very small, albeit select group of people. The Sock Monkey has a well deserved place in American toy history. It's a story that should be preserved for its ingenuity, motherly love and historical context that has given rise to the enduring appeal of the Sock Monkey. There is even a permanent exhibit of the Sock Monkey at the Midway Village Museum in Rockford, Illinois. Us Sock Monkey fans must stick together!
